Totally Free Credit Report
The free credit report is only available from annualcreditreport.com. However, there are impostor sites claiming to offer totally free credit reports or a free credit check. Most of these sites are scams: they’ll require the person to sign up for a free limited trial, and then force him or her into a paid subscription afterwards. If the person does not pay the fees of the websites, they can start charging fees on the person’s credit card for the supposedly free credit report. Furthermore, reports provided by companies other than Annual Credit Report may not be recognized by lenders.
These sites can be confusing as the addresses are deceptively similar to Annual Credit Report. One way to tell if a website is unreliable is when it asks for personal information in an email; an official site will only ask for personal information in the request form.
